Ocean Biome Project Ideas

Instructor: Kerry Gray

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

The ocean biome contains fascinating information that your students will enjoy learning. Elementary and middle school students will readily engross themselves in these active learning projects.

Ocean Biome

The ocean is the largest biome with many different plants and animals. Because of its size and depth, the ocean creates mystery that fascinates students with fantastical-type environments and sea creatures. The projects in this article allow elementary and middle school students the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that support their understanding of the ocean biome.

Ocean Biome Projects

Layers of the Ocean Step Book

Grade levels: K-8th grade

Length: 45-90 minutes

Materials needed: construction paper (black, dark purple, dark blue, light purple, light blue), colored chalk, stapler

Provide each student with 5 different colors of construction paper as indicated in the materials list.

The black sheet of construction paper will go on the bottom (can hold vertically or horizontally). Students will then place the dark purple sheet on top of the black sheet but leave 1-inch of the black paper showing. Students will add the additional sheets of paper in order from darkest to lightest with each sheet revealing an inch of the paper below it. Students will then fold the stack of papers in half backwards and staple the top to create a step book.
