Of Mice and Men Chapter 1 Questions

Instructor: Jason Lineberger

Jason has 20 years of education experience including 14 years of teaching college literature.

If you're using 'Of Mice and Men' in your class, then you may need some questions to check understanding or prompt a discussion. These questions begin at the recall level and move into higher order thinking.

Types of Questions

The questions below fall into two major categories. The first set of questions can be used to check for understanding, or they can be given before a reading assignment to guide students to particular details. The second set of questions will push students to use higher order thinking skills, from analysis to synthesis, and evaluation. These questions can start a class debate, focus a small group discussion, or provide an essay prompt on an assessment.

Check for Understanding

  • Describe George. What does he look like? How does he dress? What are his mannerisms?
  • Describe Lennie. What adjectives come to mind when you think of him? Describe how he acts.
  • What does George tell Lennie not to do when they come to the river?
  • What does George catch Lennie carrying, that he's not supposed to have?
  • How does Lennie treat small animals?
  • What did Lennie do to get them kicked out of Weed, their last stop?
  • Lennie asks George to tell him his favorite story. Explain the story George tells.
  • As the chapter ends, George gives Lennie some instructions about how to handle trouble. What is Lennie supposed to do if trouble finds the two friends?
