Gifted students have unique needs that educators must consider. This lesson will explore the organizations designed to support gifted education teachers in doing so. We will end with a short quiz.

What is Gifted Education?

Take a moment to reflect on your old school days. Were there some students who struggled with the material while others found it simple? These differences in ability are relatively normal in a traditional classroom. However, what happens when the student is so far ahead that his or her educational needs are not being met in a traditional classroom?

While there is no agreed upon definition for giftedness, tests of aptitude and intellect are often used to determine exceptional achievement or talent. In education, gifted students usually rank in the top 10% of their class. This means that they achieve at a higher level than 90% of their fellow students. Needless to say, this can present problems for educators and special education may be required to meet the learning needs of the student.

Educators working with gifted students must stay abreast of appropriate teaching methods and curriculum, and be aware of the unique social and emotional needs that can arise. Many professional organizations can provide the necessary information and support for gifted educators. Let's explore some of these more closely.

Examples of Supporting Organizations

Gifted education teachers are those that specialize in the education of gifted students. Depending on the individual school and district, this may require additional training above and beyond what is required to become licensed as a teacher.
