Overview of the National Association of Special Education Teachers

Instructor: Brian Fraga
In this lesson we'll examine an association dedicated to special education teachers. We'll examine what the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) is, how to join NASET, and the benefits of becoming a member.

How many of us are aware that there is an association for special education teachers? Many of us are aware of associations for teachers, in general, but if you're like me, I had no idea that there was an association that was specific to teachers of special education students. In this lesson, we'll examine what the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) is, how to join NASET, and the benefits of becoming a member.

NASET's mission is to render all possible support and assistance to professionals who teach children with special needs by promoting standards of excellence and innovation in special education research, practice, and policy in order to foster exceptional teaching for exceptional children. NASET was founded to support the profession of special education teachers and to give those teachers a way to share their ideas with others on a national level. This organization provides support and aid to its members, which include current and future special educators. NASET's overall goal is to establish the highest level of professional standards for those assisting students with special needs. They promote professional excellence by ensuring teachers are informed of current issues related to special education. NASET inspires professional development through networking, research, publications, and membership benefits.

Joining NASET

Current special education teachers, those in related positions, and those studying to become a special education teacher are able to join NASET. There are a couple of ways to join NASET. The easiest, and quickest way, to join is through their online application. Another way to join is to download their application form and mail it directly to NASET. Members of NASET receive many advantages related to their profession, which is discussed in the benefits section. NASET is different from other associations for educators because it is solely focused on special education.

There are several different categories related to membership. Pricing for each membership is $59 per year or $95 for two years, except for the student membership, which is $50 per year or $90 for two years.
