Warm-Up and Preparation

  • Arrange the desks in your classroom into a long row that runs the length of the room. Ask:
    • How long do you think it takes you to walk all the way around these desks?
    • How many steps will you use to circle these desks?
  • Divide students into partners and have them take turns timing how long it takes their partner to circle the desks. Also have the walking partner count the footsteps taken and record the data.
  • Set data aside for later.
  • Now show students a copy of the map of Central America and ask them to locate the country of Panama and raise their hands when they find it.
  • Allow students who have located the country to give verbal clues to others until all have found it.
