Planet Venus Facts: Lesson for Kids

Instructor: Dina Albert
When you look up at the sky right before the Sun comes up, you might see what looks like a bright star. This is actually Venus that your looking at. In this lesson, you will learn more about what makes Venus unique from other planets.

Where is Venus?

Put on your space suit and jump into the space shuttle headed for Venus. This planet is named after the Roman goddess of love and is the second planet from the Sun. Sit back and relax, because you are traveling about 67 million miles and the trip will last about 100 days.

Physical Attributes of Venus

Wow that was a long trip, and you are very excited to step onto the planet that is pretty close to the size of Earth. If you could step onto Venus you would see inactive volcanoes, but for now you will need to admire the 400 million year old planet from space. As you continue to look at this bright planet, you are reminded of the moon you see from your window. But Venus does not have any Moons, and for a moment you start to miss home. Suddenly, you see an asteroid shooting towards the planet. Unlike Earth, Venus is untouched by these shooting rocks because its atmosphere is so heavy they are crushed before they reach the surface.

A Day on Venus

Now here's another question. What would you do every day for 243 days? Because this is how long it takes for Venus to spin one time around on its axis. So if you plan to go to Venus, you're in for a very, very long day. Also, you would see the sun rising in the west and setting in the east because Venus rotates clockwise around the Sun, which is unlike Earth that rotates counter-clockwise.
