Planning a Speech Lesson Plan

Instructor: Dana Dance-Schissel

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

What does it take to plan an effective speech? This lesson plan uses two interesting and informative video lessons to outline critical information. A small group activity connects students to the material in a meaningful way.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • summarize the key elements of effective speeches
  • explain the essential elements for the body of a speech
  • list the steps in outlining a speech

Delineate a speaker's argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and relevance and sufficiency of the evidence and identifying when irrelevant evidence is introduced.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.4

Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.

Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. (See grade 8 Language standards 1 and 3 here for specific expectations.)
