Teachers need to keep their days organized and flowing smoothly. They do this by carefully planning a daily schedule. This lesson describes ways teachers can plan their days to promote learning.

Effective Classroom Management

Today was Katie's first day as a classroom teacher. She prepared her room carefully for her second-grade students and designed lessons to make sure all students have a chance to succeed. She made extra copies of work in case students made mistakes and put cute name tags on desks to welcome each student. She thought she had the day carefully planned with plenty of work for students to do at their seats, but by noon they were antsy and began misbehaving. By the time the bell rang at the end of the day, Katie was exhausted from disciplining her students. What went wrong?

Katie made a rookie mistake. Her daily schedule, the plan she has that guides her day, wasn't balanced or developmentally appropriate. She had too much seat work and too little movement. She had all students working on the same task, which left some bored quickly and others frustrated. Katie planned for lunch, recess, and music class, but forgot to arrange her time in class carefully to promote learning for all students. What's a girl to do?

Planning Appropriate Tasks

Katie went straight to her principal to discuss the problem. Together, they made a plan to improve the experiences in Katie's classroom. The first thing they looked at was the amount of time students were spending on work, or time on task. Effective teachers plan their time to make the most of learning and cut down on behavior problems and boredom. One of Katie's mistakes was that she planned tasks that weren't keeping all her learners' needs in mind.
