Plant Adaptations Lesson Plan

Instructor: Suzanne Rose

Suzanne has taught all levels PK-graduate school and has a PhD in Instructional Systems Design. She currently teachers literacy courses to preservice and inservice teachers.

This lesson focuses on plant adaptations in both desert and aquatic environments. Students will make connections between the environment and the specific plant adaptations that allow it to survive in that environment.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this lesson, students will:

  • identify examples of plants that live in desert and aquatic environments
  • identify examples of adaptations made by plants
  • connect plant adaptations with environmental characteristics
  • conduct research on a plant to identify its adaptations

Length

60-90 minutes, plus follow-up at a later date

Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.

Materials Needed

  • Projector or SMART Board to show video lesson
  • Plant Adaptations: Types & Examples Quiz (1 copy per student)
  • Plant adaptations chart
  • Internet access and computers for plant research
