Platonic Solids Lesson Plan

In this lesson plan, students will learn basic information on platonic solids. They will use active exploration to create the five platonic solids and then play a game to solidify the concepts presented in the lesson.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify the five platonic solids
  • Demonstrate an understanding of each platonic solid
  • Define platonic solid

Curriculum Standards


Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).


Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.). Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting a segment; bisecting an angle; constructing perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector of a line segment; and constructing a line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.


Warm Up

  • Begin the lesson by asking if anyone can name a three-dimensional shape.
  • Allow students to go to the board to draw 3D shapes.
  • Point out that in prisms and pyramids, the sides are not all the same (pyramids have triangles attached to base shapes, and prisms are rectangles attached to varying shapes on the sides).
  • Ask if anyone knows the definition of the special 3D shapes called platonic solids.
  • Tell students that they will be watching a video lesson on platonic solids.


  • Begin the video lesson What Are Platonic Solids? - Definition and Types .
  • Pause the video at time marker 1:08 and check to see if there are any questions thus far.
  • Ask:
    • Who can define platonic solid?
    • How many platonic solids exists?
    • Can anyone summarize a tetrahedron?
    • Can you think of any other uses for a tetrahedron?
  • Continue the video pausing after each section to review the type of platonic solid covered in the section and alternative uses for the platonic solid not mentioned in the video.
  • Finish the video.
  • Conduct a final class discussion:
    • Who can name and describe all the types of platonic solids?
    • What makes a platonic solid different from other solids?
    • What uses are there for platonic solids in the real world?
  • If you feel that a large portion of the class was unable to answer these questions, consider playing the video once more.
  • Hand out hard transcripts of the video lesson What Are Platonic Solids? - Definition and Types. Ask students to review the transcript and ask any final questions before the quiz.
  • Hand out the lesson quiz. Go over each question and answer with the class after they have finished it.


Activity 1 - Make Platonic Solids


  • Popsicle sticks or wooden skewers (optional)
  • Paper
  • Tape, scissors and a ruler (per group)
  • Printed templates of platonic solids (optional for students who may need extra support)
