Edgar Allan Poe was a popular poet and writer. Unity of effect was the method he used to evoke clear and powerful emotions in his readers. In this lesson, we will explore the use of unity of effect and practice identifying its use in Poe's work.

Learning Objectives

By the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define unity of effect
  • identify examples of unity of effect in Edgar Allan Poe's work

60-75 minutes (with possible need of additional time for group presentations)

By the end of grade 9, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 9-10 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
