If you are reading Shakespeare's ~'Hamlet~' with your students, you might want them to think about characters other than the most central ones. This lesson provides essay topics that will help students focus on Polonius.

Writing About Polonius

Often, when students read a play as complicated as Hamlet, they spend a lot of time focusing on the major characters, such as Hamlet, Ophelia and Laertes. However, in order to really understand the play and its meaning, you will also want to help students think about more minor characters and what they represent. One such character is Polonius, Ophelia and Laertes' father, who Hamlet ridicules and eventually kills.

Polonius actually plays a central role in Hamlet, even though he does so from the sidelines. Helping students focus on his character is a great way to get them to understand some of the central themes in the play. The essay topics in this lesson will bring students in closer to Polonius and help them think about what he stands for and how he relates to others.

Polonius and Other Characters

The topics in this section help students think about the ways Polonius interacts with and accentuates the traits of other characters in the play.
