Practical Application: Evaluating Yourself as a Speaker Questionnaire

Instructor: Yuanxin (Amy) Yang Alcocer

Amy has a master's degree in secondary education and has taught math at a public charter high school.

Being a good public speaker is essential for business owners and for anyone who needs to speak with others. Use this questionnaire to self-assess your own public speaking ability.

Public Speaking

Being a good public speaker is about conveying the right information to the right audience at the right time. Good public speakers are able to convince and persuade people to do certain things such as purchasing a promotional product.

Although the best evaluation of public speaking ability is the reaction of the audience, there are self-assessment questions that can be used to help improve your public speaking ability prior to the event or right after.

In addition to the questions listed here, the lesson Evaluating Yourself as a Speaker: Goals & Methods has others that can also be used.

Self-Assessment Questionnaire

Before the Event

Before a public speaking event, answer these questions as a means to prepare.

  • Do I have an outline?
  • Have I thought of possible questions that may be asked?
  • Are there possible objections to what I am going to say?
  • Am I solving the potential problems my audience?
  • Is the information I am presenting useful to my expected audience?
  • Have I practiced the talk enough times?
  • Does the timing of my talk follow the given schedule?

If you answered any of the above questions in the negative, then give some time to work on that area. For example, if you can't think of possible objections, go out and talk to some people about the subject and gather feedback. You might even set up an informal focus group for further input and possible objections.
