Practical Application: Henri Fayol's 14 Principles of Management Infographic

Instructor: Scott Tuning

Despite being formulated more than 100 years ago, Henri Fayol's 14 Principles of Management remain relevant and timely today. Leaders who manage with these principles in mind have the best chance of being successful.

Why Fayol's 14 Principles of Management Matter Today

Times change, and the workforce is no exception. Specifically, what do you think is different about today's workforce compared to the workforce of the early 20th century? Here are a few things that might have made your list:

  • Employees have vastly shorter tenures in any particular role or with any employer.
  • High-value benefits, like pensions, are now largely a relic of a bygone era in the private and non-profit sectors.
  • The things that motivate employees have changed dramatically.
  • There are significant demographic differences between the eras.

One primary value of Fayol's 14 Principles of Management is that, despite having been developed before about a century ago, they remain quite timely and relevant today.

Leaders and managers who implement these principles will help create a great work environment for their company, themselves, and their employees. To help keep these principles in mind, consider keeping an infographic like the one below close at hand.

If you need to revisit Fayol's 14 Principles, you can do so by reviewing the material found in this lesson or this one. As you look at the graphic below, ask yourself the following:

  • What does each of the 14 principles look like in my area of responsibility?
  • Does my supervisor manage with these principles in mind?
  • Which principle is likely to be the most challenging for me personally and for the company as a whole?
