What Are Marketing Plans

Marketing plans are essential for any business. These documents outline the current marketing situation for a business, as well as the plan for achieving financial goals. As you read in the lesson, What is a Marketing Plan? - Definition & Sample, a marketing plan has several sections that make it successful. This template will help you create your own marketing plan that is tailored to your business.

Template

Now, let's look at the template. For each category in the marketing plan, you can see the description of what goes in that section followed by an example. For our example, let's use a case study of an app development company for smartphones. In the notes section, you can include your own information in the template that applies to your business.

Company Vision:

Category Description Example Your Notes
Market Research This step of the marketing plan includes research on where the market is currently for your type of business. Market is improving for app sales overall, with many customers using in-app purchases.
Competition This step clearly outlines the competition and what the company will do to stand out. With many other app development companies, we want to stand out by having excellent customer service and 24/7 tech support.
Strategies This section explains the marketing strategies used to promote the plan. We will use email blast campaigns and advertising on social media.
Budget This section explains how much money is available for the marketing plan and how it will increase revenue. We have a budget of $5,000 for the marketing plan.
Goals This section explains clear, tangible, goals for the company based on the plan. We hope to improve Q4 sales by 25% after the marketing campaign.
Monitoring Results This section defines when the progress of the plan will be monitored and how. We will measure the percent increase in sales halfway through Q4 and at the end of Q4 to assess the success of the plan.

Tips for Using the Template

Company Vision

Start by determining the overall vision for the company. In order to create a successful marketing plan, you need to know the business' goals for the future. Marketing plans should span between one to five years, so you should keep long-term goals for the business in mind.
