Instructor: Natalie Boyd

Natalie is a teacher and holds an MA in English Education and is in progress on her PhD in psychology.

Personnel issues can arise in any workplace, but the personnel issues that come up on virtual teams can be especially difficult to manage. In this practical application, you'll reflect on how to moderate personnel issues in a virtual environment.

Personnel Issues and Virtual Teams

Managing a virtual team can be difficult, and issues that arise can often cause major tensions among team members. As a result, it's important to know how to moderate personnel issues in a virtual environment.

Among other challenges are the two main types of personnel issues that might come up:

  • Interpersonal issues that spring mostly from communication challenges
  • Performance issues that involve the inability of team members to complete the tasks given to them

Performance issues can be measured in many ways, including through the use of deadlines, quality checks, and managerial feedback. Interpersonal issues can lead to conflicts, which can be mitigated by clarifying group norms, communicating regularly, and working on team building.

To better understand how to moderate and mitigate personnel issues in virtual teams, reflect on the scenario below. The following lessons can help to guide you through this reflection:
