  • Review or teach students about the term 'preposition.'
  • Write three sentences on the board and divide students into partners. Ask the pairs to copy the sentences into their notebooks and then work together to identify the preposition in each sentence.
  • Show students how to underline the preposition in each sentence as they share their answers.
  • Next, tell students that each preposition has an object and that this object, along with the preposition, is called a prepositional phrase.
  • Circle the prepositional phrases in the three sentences, gradually allowing students to identify them without your guidance by the third example.
  • Write two more sentences with prepositional phrases and ask students to identify the preposition and prepositional phrase.
  • Work together to underline and circle as earlier. Repeat as necessary to ensure understanding.
