Use this lesson to teach your students about process drama used in theater. A text lesson guides students through the what, why and who of the process, then discusses techniques. Apply learning with active, hands-on activities and check understanding with a quiz.

Learning Objectives

Analyze in detail a series of events described in a text; determine whether earlier events caused later ones or simply preceded them.

Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment (e.g., Auden's 'Musée des Beaux Arts' and Breughel's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus).


  • Start the lesson by writing the prompt 'What is theater?' on the board and asking students to turn and talk to a partner to agree on an answer. Share ideas and discuss as a class.
  • Tell students they will be learning about something called process drama. Have them predict what the term means, then distribute the lesson Process Drama: Definition & Techniques.
  • Read the first sections 'Process Drama' and 'How Process Drama Works' together. Discuss:
    • How is process drama like and unlike traditional theater?
    • What is your experience with process drama?
    • What are the steps in process drama?
    • What is the focus with process drama?
    • What is the goal of process drama?
  • Now have students read the remainder of the lesson.
  • Choose a current event about which students have knowledge, such as global warming or political events.
  • Assign roles for students and have them participate in a process drama.
  • Hit the 'pause' button as necessary to tweak and interject to help students with their understanding.
  • Afterwards, give students the quiz to check understanding.
