Materials

  • 8 pieces of chart paper or poster paper
  • markers

Advance Preparation

Prepare chart or poster paper ahead of time by writing category headings at the top of each. Use the following headings:

  • companies
  • famous people
  • products
  • sports teams
  • states
  • countries
  • cities
  • Miscellaneous (This category can be any other type of proper noun that doesn't fit under the other seven categories.)

Poster Directions

1. Divide the class into eight groups. Try to have a mix of students with a variety of ability levels in each.

2. Assign each group to one of the eight proper noun categories.

3. Distribute posters and enough markers for each group member.

4. Explain to students that they are to write down as many proper nouns as they can, as long as they belong in the category listed at the top of their poster. Students should take turns coming up with a proper noun.

5. Team members must agree that the proper noun mentioned really belongs on the poster.

6. If the proper noun belongs, the student should write it neatly on the poster. If the group decides it does not belong, the student must think of another proper noun until he or she comes up with an appropriate answer.

7. Give students enough time to have what you feel is an adequate amount of proper nouns on each poster.

Gallery Walk Directions

1. When students are finished, ask groups to decide which student will tape the poster on the wall. Encourage students to spread posters around the room.

2. Explain to students that they should move around the room in their groups to each of the other posters. Only one group should be at each poster at a time.
