Materials

Instructions

  • Engage with students by asking what they think the most famous love story is. Let students share with a neighbor before getting answers from the rest of the class.
  • Explain to students that they're going to be learning about one of the most famous love stories of all time, but they may never have heard of it unless they've been to India.
  • Tell students to fold a piece of paper in half, length-wise. On one side, write 'Characters' and on the other side write 'Actions.' As they watch the video, they should write down important characters on the left, and then write what that character does on the right.
  • Watch the video, pausing at the following points to have a discussion:
    • 1:14 Have you ever heard of the Ramayana before? What have you heard?
    • 2:36 How did Rama and Sita get together?
    • 4:08 Are you surprised about how Rama's brother acted? What kind of lesson do you think you could learn from his example?
    • 5:34 What do you think is going to happen to Rama and Sita?
    • 6:32 Are you surprised by this turn of events? What do you think caused this to happen?
    • 7:54 Why do you think it might be important that Rama is revealed to actually be Vishnu?
  • To check for understanding, have students complete the lesson quiz.
