In this lesson, we will learn how picture graphs are great tools to organize, represent, and interpret data. Also, we will explore the functions and features of picture graphs.

What Is a Picture Graph?

A picture graph is a display of data with pictures that represent numerical quantities of assigned data to a specific topic. Data is a collection of related information and discrete items that are used to represent situations individually or as a whole entity (for example, the different flavors of ice cream a group may like).

Within a picture graph, there are certain features with specific functions. The title of the picture graph gives the reader an idea of what data is to be displayed. Most picture graphs will have a key, which tells us the number that each picture represents. Some picture graphs have two axes. The x-axis of a picture graph displays the categories that were observed, surveyed, or measured. The y-axis of a picture graph represents the scale or the number or occurrences. A scale is a set of numbers that represents the data with numerical quantities. The scale is organized into intervals (for instance: 1, 2, 3, 4, or 0, 5, 10, etc.).

A picture graph is a useful tool to organize, represent, and interpret data. Take a moment and look at this picture graph. What are some things you see in this graph?

Within this graph, we can see the seven different sports categories: football, tennis, soccer, baseball, rugby, hockey, and basketball. Also, in this picture graph, each sport is represented by an icon. The data in this picture graph reflects 160 students were surveyed, observed, or measured. If you add up all the categories, you will get 160 students. This picture graph has a title, x-axis, and y-axis, which are important when displaying your data results.
