Respect is a word that is used often, but do you know what it looks like? Explore ways to respect other people, our world, and yourself in this lesson!

What is Respect?

A famous singer many years ago sang a song about R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Have you heard it? It's a catchy tune, but what does respect really mean? You show respect when you treat something with care and make a priority of not hurting something. You can be respectful of others and their feelings, the environment, and even yourself! Let's explore some ways that we can behave respectfully.

Respecting Other People

The best way to respect others is to visualize in your mind how you would like to be treated. You probably want people to be nice to you and not make fun of you, right? This is exactly how you show respect to others. If someone is different than you, or has different ideas than you, you want to show them that you find their differences valuable. It would not be a good world to live in if we were all the same. You can like all the things that make others different from you!

Also, listen to other opinions without interrupting, and don't laugh at people to hurt their feelings. Use manners when someone is speaking or serving you. Saying ''please'', ''thank you'', ''yes, ma'am'' or '' yes, sir'' are all ways that you can be respectful to others.

Respecting each other means being kind and appreciating differences in people.

Respecting the Environment

We only have one planet, so we have to take care of it. Remember, respect is not harming other people or things. Litter is definitely something that harms our planet, so throw away trash where it belongs, not on the ground. Recycle so that there isn't as much trash to be collected. Turn off water faucets and lights when you are not using them so energy is not wasted. Treating our Earth with care is a great way to show respect.

If people respected the planet, there would not be a need to pick up litter.
