Read this lesson to learn how restaurants keep a record of their daily sales so they know how much money they are making each day and whether the restaurant is growing or not.

A Restaurant

You have been given the keys to a fully functional and completely operational restaurant complete with staff and a loyal customer base. You have already served breakfast and lunch. Breakfast was pretty busy, but your lunch rush was spectacular. Your restaurant was full with people waiting outside. You were worried for a minute, but your staff made everyone waiting feel comfortable and everyone made it through the lunch service. Now, for the dinner service. Your team is gearing up for another busy night. You help out as much as you can by keeping everyone organized and communicating with each other. At the end of the day, everyone is tired, but happy at another well done day. You wind down in your office while preparing your end of day paperwork.

Finances

This end of day paperwork mostly involves finances. You want to make sure that your restaurant is profitable, that it is making money. You have been looking through the paperwork from the previous owner. You see that everyday, the previous owner prepared one particular piece of financial data. And your previous owner told you that in order to stay on top of the restaurant, you need to keep a close eye on your finances. You need to keep track of how much money is coming in each day and how much money is going out each day. You need to make sure that your income is always greater than your expenses.

Daily Sales

To help you in that endeavor, you see that the previous owner always prepared a daily sales report. This report shows how much the restaurant makes each day. This report can be shown day by day for each day or as a sheet showing multiple days. It includes not only your sales, but also the fees you pay to your credit card companies.

For your restaurant, this is what you prepare at the end of today:

Daily Sales Report for 8/4

If you'd like to see several days at a glance, you can add an extra column per day for the sale amounts you've made for each day.
