Rhyming Words Lesson Plan

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

What does it take to create a rhyme? This lesson plan includes an educational text lesson on rhyming and a fun competition designed to help students nail down rhyming words.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define 'rhyme'
  • identify rhyming words
  • give a word that rhymes with a teacher-provided word

  • 45 minutes to 1 hour

Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts, including using adjectives and adverbs to describe (e.g., When other kids are happy that makes me happy).

Materials

Instructions

  • Write the word 'rhyme' on the board.
  • Ask students to explain what the word means, giving several students a chance to speak.
  • Pass out the paper copies of the text lesson to the class now, one per student.
  • Now ask one student to play Jim and another to play Molly.
  • Have the two students read the 'Rhyming Words Fun' section of the text lesson in character.
  • Now review what the students said about 'rhyme' and review the rhyming words featured in the text lesson.
  • Have students take turns reading aloud one sentence each of the 'What Are Rhyming Words?' section of the text lesson.
  • Review the 'Words that Rhyme' and 'Words that Do Not Rhyme' charts with the class before continuing.
  • Sing the ABC song with the class now.
  • Have students take turns reading a sentence each of the remainder of the text lesson.
  • Review the Rain, Rain Go Away and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star songs with the class by singing them together and asking students to give a thumbs up sign at every rhyming word in the songs.

  • What words can we rhyme with our names?
