Road signs are a common part of life. You can help your students learn to identify and understand the meaning of road signs by utilizing these activities and games that teach the purpose of the signs.

Road Sign Games

Helping students learn and understand the importance and meaning of road signs is an important part of life education. After you have reviewed signs with your class, there are many fun games that can be played to help kids identify and comprehend the meaning of various signs. Use the suggestions in this lesson to support your students in understanding the purpose of each road sign. The interactive games and activities are a great way to infuse creativity and enjoyment into the road sign lessons.

Read a Book

As a class, you can read a book together that discusses road signs. Each time the kids see or hear a road sign, they can raise their hands or clap. This will help the kids be aware of the signs, begin to understand the meaning of each sign, and respond quickly. Two books that can be helpful are: I Read Signs by Tana Hoban or I See a Sign by Lars Klove.

Road Sign Scavenger Hunt

Just outside of the school doors are various road signs that kids can start to recognize. Create a game card that includes typical signs that the kids will see within a few blocks of the school. The kids can bring their game card and mark each sign they see on their walk. This is also a great time to talk about what the signs mean and how people and drivers are affected by the signs.

Name That Sign

Divide the class into two teams. Take turns showing each team a sign and letting the kids identify what the sign is. The team gets a second point if they can explain what the sign means. If the kids get the answer wrong, the other team gets a chance.
