Learn about one of the most beautiful flowers in nature, the rose! In this lesson, find out about different types of roses, how to care for them, and what diseases and insects are dangerous to roses.

What Is a Rose?

Close your eyes and think of all of the symbols of Valentine's Day that you can imagine. I bet you're thinking of chocolates, teddy bears, and maybe flowers, right? Let's focus on the flowers. Most people think of roses when they think of Valentine's Day, because roses are flowers that symbolize love!

Perhaps roses symbolize love because many people feel they are one of the most beautiful types of flowers. A rose is a perennial, which means that it will grow more than one year or season, and roses come in many colors and types.

Red roses are a symbol of love and beauty.

Types of Roses

There are several different types of roses. The roses that are normally cut for Valentine's Day come from rose bushes that can grow four or five feet from the ground. There are also roses that can 'climb.' These roses become attached to buildings, fences, or arbors and can grow to great heights. Miniature roses are extremely small. They can be grown in pots and are often given as gifts. All of these types of roses can come in different colors. Roses can be white, pink, red, yellow, or a mix of two or more of these colors. Some roses are even be blue!

Climbing roses can attach to almost anything, including a brick wall!

How To Care for Roses

Now that you've learned about different types of roses, you're ready to plant some, right? Here are some important things to consider. Roses like sunlight, so choose a spot that gets direct sunlight for the majority of the day. Do not choose a spot near trees or other bushes, because the roots from those plants will take away water and nutrients that the rose plant needs.

It's important to give roses a good watering two or three times a week. There are special fertilizers, or food for plants, that are made just for roses. Feeding them is important!
