Rumors & Gossip Lesson Plan

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

Rumors and gossip are all too common on campuses. Use this lesson plan to help you teach students about rumors and gossip using an activity that helps them identify examples of both.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define the terms 'rumor' and 'gossip'
  • list key characteristics of rumors and gossip
  • distinguish between rumors and gossip
  • discuss the harmful qualities of rumors and gossip

Analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and evaluate the motives (e.g., social, commercial, political) behind its presentation.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.3

Delineate a speaker's argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and relevance and sufficiency of the evidence and identifying when irrelevant evidence is introduced.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.4

Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
