This lesson explains types of segment bisectors and demonstrates examples of segment bisectors. We will also review the definitions of some key vocabulary words.

What Is a Segment Bisector?

A line segment has two endpoints; that is, it has a starting point and an ending point, much like a dead-end street. Bisector means to divide, not just in two, but in halves, or two equal parts. Therefore, a segment bisector is a point, a line, a ray, or a line segment that bisects another line segment. Let's quickly review. A point is a position in space. A line continues forever in both directions. A line segment has two endpoints, as we already stated. A ray has one endpoint and continues forever in the other direction.

Examples of Segment Bisectors

Let's look at some specific examples of different types of segment bisectors. Here is a segment bisecting a segment. You can see that segment CD bisects AB:

Here's one of a ray bisecting a segment. In this one, ray MN bisects segment AB:

A line can also bisect a segment. Line PQ is bisecting segment AB:
