Smoking Prevention Lesson Plan

This lesson plan explores smoking prevention methods and treatment options. Students will watch a video, participate in discussion questions, complete an activity, and take a quiz.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson students will be able to:

  • discuss the disadvantages of smoking and tobacco use.
  • identify prevention methods for youth and adults.
  • create a smoking prevention campaign

Materials

Instructions

  • Begin this lesson by polling students and asking them if they know someone who smokes.
  • Then ask them to discuss some of the health risks associated with smoking.
  • Now, tell them this lesson explores the use of tobacco, prevention methods, and treatment.
  • Distribute the Tobacco Abuse Prevention & Treatment Programs lesson, start the video, pause at 02:38, then start the following discussion:
    • Based on the video, what is the best way to turn people against tobacco use?
    • Discuss the prevention methods utilized in educational institutions.
    • How have laws impacted the abuse of tobacco?
    • The cost of using tobacco has increased, explain how prices have been a deterrent.
    • Describe the purpose of smoking bans and its effect.
  • Now, restart the video, play until the end, then pose these discussion points:
    • Describe the self-medication treatment methods available for smokers.
    • Explain the benefits of treatment centers.
    • What is behavioral therapy?
  • Now, show the lesson quiz and asks students to write down the answer, then review.
