Warm-Up and Preparation

  • Gather students together and tell them they will be learning how to shoot a soccer ball. Ask:
    • What does it mean to 'shoot' the ball?
  • Lead students to the understanding that to shoot means to try to kick the ball into the opponent's net in order to score a goal.
  • Warm students up with general stretching movements, then divide into partners.
  • Help them to determine which is their dominant kicking foot by giving each partner pair a ball and having them kick it back and forth gently.
  • Once students have identified their dominant kicking foot, show students the proper way to kick a soccer ball, using one of these three methods:
    • Instep - the inside of the foot
    • Laces - the top of the foot
    • Outside - The outside of the foot
  • Have partners stand about five feet from one another and practice passing the ball using the instep. Circulate and guide when necessary.
  • Now have students try the outside pass a few times as you guide.
  • Tell students that the laces kick is used mostly for passing long distances. Have them back up and try passing in this way, then discuss:
    • Which method did you find most useful?
    • Which method do you prefer?
