Social Media Safety Lesson Plan

This lesson plan can be used to increase your students' safety with social media usage. An informative text lesson explains how to use social media carefully. Students will then use this information to create their own personal social media safety plan. Finish with a quiz to test understanding.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • explain how to remain safe when using social media
  • make a plan for safe social media usage
  • explain why it is important to be safe when using social media

1 - 1.5 hours

Materials

  • Copies of the text lesson How to Stay Safe on Social Media, one for each student
  • Prepared scenario cards in which imaginary students make mistakes about social media safety

Warm Up and Preparation

  • Have students think about when they go out with friends and ask:
    • How do you keep yourself safe?
    • What safety lessons have your parents and other adults taught you?
    • Why do you take these measures to remain safe in public social situations?
    • What may happen if you don't take these measures?
  • Discuss how, as we grow up, we get more freedom from adults and take on more responsibility for ourselves. Ask students to share experiences on this topic, such as beginning to babysit or cook for themselves.
