Many adults need help developing social skills, and there is no shame in that. This lesson offers you some great activities to help adults understand what it means to be social.

Why Adult Social Skills?

Social skills are the strategies and habits many people use without even realizing to connect with other people and act appropriate in social settings. Many adults struggle with social skills, and this can happen for a variety of reasons. Individuals on the autistic spectrum may lack the intuition needed for the social world, and people with anxiety might feel impeded or nervous in social settings. Some adults also just have not had enough experience socializing and need an extra boost.

Social skills are very important, though. Not only can life be more pleasurable if we know how to make friends and enjoy other people's company, but the ability to socialize appropriately can make adults more successful in the workplace because they will know how to connect properly with colleagues and supervisors. This lesson gives you some ideas to use with your adult students for working on social skills.

Name Skills, Strengths, & Weaknesses

One of the best things you can do to get a group of adults working on their social skills is to help them understand what social skills are in the first place. Give your students a concrete definition: social skills are those strategies and techniques we use when relating to or with other people. Then, have them work interactively to make a list of social skills they have seen, experienced or heard about. Ask, 'What makes an interaction with another person work well?'
