Teaching children about using the potty can be really challenging, regardless of their age and abilities. This lesson provides social stories that will help students understand why and how to use the potty.

Using Social Stories for Potty Training

Whether you are working with preschool-aged students who are learning how to use the potty in a typical fashion, or older students with special needs who require extra time and assistance learning this important life skill, potty training can be difficult. Usually, there is plenty of mess involved, and it can be hard to find the right words to talk to children about what you expect of them and why.

One way to help many students with potty training is by giving them social stories, or scripted language, that they can internalize for thinking through strategies and behaviors. The social stories in this lesson offer examples of text you can use with students, but you can also modify these to reflect the specific needs and capacities of the children you are working with. You should also alter language around body parts and functions to reflect the words students are most accustomed to.

Social Story for Preschool Potty Training

When I was a baby, I did all my pee and poop in diapers. My parents and my babysitters changed my diaper when I was wet and dirty. Now I am not a baby anymore! I am a big kid, and it is time for me to learn to use the potty.

When I feel like I am about to pee, I get a funny feeling right at the bottom of my belly. This feeling tells me pee is about to come! I race to the potty and pull off my pants, or I can ask a grownup to tell me. I sit on the potty and wait for the pee to come. After it comes out into the potty, I clap hooray! I wipe myself and a grownup helps me clean the potty out.

When I feel like I am about to poop, I get a funny feeling in my bottom. I sit on the potty and wait for the poop to come. I need a grownup to help me wipe after I am done pooping.

Sometimes, while I am learning to use the potty, I might have an accident. Everyone has accidents when they are learning, and that's okay! The bigger I get, the better I will be at making it to the potty on time.

My parents are so proud of me for learning to use the potty! They say they will buy me new underpants to celebrate how much I am growing up.

Social Story for Older Child Potty Training

My parents and my teachers say it is time for me to learn to pee and poop in the toilet. I know I will feel big and proud when I learn to do these things, but it is hard!
