Social Stories for School Holidays

Social stories are an excellent tool for helping students learn about events that fall outside of their usual routines. In this lesson, you will find social stories about school holidays.

Interrupted Routines

Do you have students who love routine? Is it difficult for them when their routines are interrupted? School provides a stable and predictable environment, and many students with social and cognitive disabilities struggle when that predictable environment is taken away, such as during school holidays. Social stories teach students about social events, such as school holidays, using simple, relatable scenarios that explain when and why these events happen and what to expect.

I Want to Go to School!

I love school. I go to school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Saturday and Sunday I stay home with Mom, Dad and my sister Jeannie.

Today is Monday. I get up and put on my blue jeans and my favorite school shirt. I come downstairs for breakfast, and I am surprised to see my big sister Jeannie is still in her pajamas! She usually gets ready before me and works on homework while she eats oatmeal.

''Jeannie, where are your school clothes? You're going to be late for school!'' I tell her.

Jeannie looks at me and grins. ''There's no school today. Today is President's Day!''

''No school? That's not fair. What will I do if I don't go to school?'' I run to find Mom.

''Mom, Jeannie says there's no school today.''

''That's right,'' Mom tells me.

''What are we going to do?'' I wail.
