Social Stories for Stealing

How do you teach students about negative behaviors such as stealing? One option is to use social stories. In this lesson, you will find social stories dealing with stealing.

What Is a Social Story?

Social stories explain behavioral expectations using simple, step-by-step stories that students can relate to. These stories can discuss behaviors that students should display, such as patience, or behaviors that students should not display, such as stealing. If you have students who are struggling to understand stealing, try using or adapting these social stories.

What Is Stealing?

I saw on the news that someone got arrested for stealing. I asked Mom what stealing means. She said that stealing means taking something that doesn't belong to you without permission or without paying for it.

At the toy store I saw a video game that I really want. If I take the video game without paying for it, that's stealing.

At Aunt Susie's house, I saw a pretty necklace on her dresser. If I take it without asking, that's stealing.

At school there are lots of paint brushes in the art room. If I take one home, that's stealing.

Mom told me that sometimes people steal big things, and sometimes people steal small things. But stealing is always wrong. Mom said I should think about how I would feel if someone stole something from me. I wouldn't like it at all. I've decided that I won't steal.
