Social Stories for Tone of Voice

Instructor: Clio Stearns

Clio has taught education courses at the college level and has a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction.

It can be really hard for students to learn to use an appropriate tone of voice. This lesson offers social stories that you can use to help children learn why their tone of voice is important, and how they can read and regulate tone.

Teaching with Social Stories

Are you struggling to teach your students why tone of voice matters, or how to regulate their tone of voice? This can be an incredibly challenging issue. Kids who talk too loud, too brashly, too quietly or too angrily can prevent themselves from being properly understood. At the same time, you want students to be able to express themselves freely and without undue censorship.

One great way to help kids learn about tone of voice is by teaching with social stories. Social stories are excerpts of scripted language told from a hypothetical student's point of view. They teach explicit vocabulary and strategies for handling difficult situations. The social stories in this lesson will help you teach your students more about regulating their tone of voice.
