Social Stories for Transitions in Life

Instructor: Bethany Calderwood

Bethany has taught special education in grades PK-5 and has a master's degree in special education.

Transitions are hard for everyone, especially for students with cognitive or social disabilities. In this lesson, you will find social stories that address the topic of life transitions.

Life Transitions

Change isn't easy. Whether students are moving, gaining a new sibling, changing schools, facing their parents' divorce or remarriage, or experiencing loss, they often struggle with the transition. Social stories, brief scenarios that describe life situations, can give students an idea of what to expect and what is expected of them.

Included in this lesson are a few social stories about life transitions. If you have a student facing major transitions, you might want to personalize the stories for that student.

The Moving Truck

The moving truck is coming tomorrow morning. Our house is full of boxes. On my bed are my pillow, my blankets, my favorite book, and my toy puppy. Most of my other toys are packed in boxes. So are my clothes, my shoes, and my books.

The kitchen is a mess. Mom is packing our plates and cups and pots and pans. We're going to eat pizza tonight on paper plates and drink our milk from plastic cups. Everything needs to be packed tightly into boxes for the movers.

Dad said we're moving because his job is moving. We have a new house, and I will have a new room. The moving truck will take all our boxes to the new house. Then I can unpack my toys, clothes and books in my new room.

When we move I will go to a new school. I will try to make new friends. I can talk to my old friends and visit them sometimes, too.
