Social Stories for Using the School Bathroom

Social Stories for Using the School Bathroom

Using the school bathroom properly and consistently is a struggle for some students. Social stories can help your students master this skill.

Social stories are typically used for students with autism or ADHD, but also can help other students. These stories are short, first-person narratives that describe a situation students struggle with, how they act, how other people feel, and how to improve their behavior.

Now let's look at examples of social stories that teach students how to use the school bathroom. These social stories will help your students use good hygiene and avoid accidents at school.

Proper Procedure

Here are two examples of social stories on properly using the school bathroom, one for girls and one for boys.

Using the Bathroom for Girls

Everyone has to use the bathroom. I have to use the bathroom when I am at school, too. If I feel like I need to use the bathroom, I tell my teacher. She walks me to the bathroom and helps me shut the door. When I get into the bathroom, I pull down my pants and my underwear. Sometimes I don't like this because it feels cold. I don't like feeling cold. But, it's important to keep my pants and underwear clean, so I need to pull them down.

After I pull my pants and underwear down, I sit on the toilet. When I sit on the toilet, I can pee or poop. When I am done, I have to wipe myself using toilet paper. After I wipe, I throw the toilet paper in the toilet, too.
