This lesson plan provides numerous activities, a quiz, and discussion topics and questions that will help students appreciate soil conservation and soil erosion.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students should be able to:

  • propose numerous solutions to soil erosion

Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 9-10 texts and topics.

Instructions

Warm Up

  • Get a sense of how much your students know about this topic and get them ready for it by asking:
    • What is soil erosion?
    • What do you think are some of the effects of soil erosion?

Video

Vocabulary Activity

  • Pass out a handout of the lesson's text to each student.
  • Students should get into groups of 2-4 and use the handout as a reference guide to help them define all of the bold terms in their own words:
    • Soil
    • Erosion
    • Soil erosion
    • Crop rotation
    • Contour farming
    • Terracing
    • Windbreaks
    • No-till farming
    • Vegetation
    • Organisms within the soil
    • Soil pH
    • Soil salinity
  • Each group should be chosen to get up in front of the class and state their definitions for one or more terms. Ensure that each group defines an equal number of new terms (based on how many groups were formed with respect to the number of terms).

Discussion

  • Now lead a discussion with the students:
    • Discuss why it takes so long for soil to form.
    • Have students name the various reasons for why soil erosion occurs.
    • Have students think through how the effects of soil erosion ultimately impact human health. What disorder may soil erosion exacerbate or even cause? How so?
    • Compare and contrast the many ways soil erosion can be prevented with the class. When necessary, show the class pictures of the prevention method, such as terracing, for a visual impact.

  • Each student needs to take the lesson quiz. Review all questions and answers with the class.
