Solving Linear Equations Activities

Instructor: Maria Airth

Algebra is exciting; convincing your students of this fact may be a bit difficult. This lesson offers fun, interactive, and competitive games and activities to get your students fully engaged in the process of solving linear equations.

Fun in Algebra

When was the last time you heard your students shout for joy that it was time to do algebra? Never? Really?

Sometimes, students find it difficult to connect with a topic that seems foreign to them. We do call math a language of its own. One great way to get students excited about math, in particular solving linear equations, is to make it personal to them. Getting them actively involved in the learning process can lead to the greatest learning, that which is done without even being aware of it happening!

In these games and activities, your students will work together in active (and sometimes competitive) ways to practice their skills at solving linear equations.

Linear Equations in Action

These games will require plenty of space for your students to get physically actively involved in solving linear equations.

Circle of Equations

  • Index Cards

  • For this game, you will need to create a set of index cards with linear equations on one side and the solution to a different equation on the other side.
    • Do this in such a way so that when you stack them, there is a solution showing at the top and the subsequent linear equations face their solutions with the final side (the bottom) showing the linear equation matching the solution on the top.
    • Make sure you have enough cards so that each student will have one card.
