South African Culture Lesson Plan

Use this lesson plan to help you teach your students about the history and culture of South Africa. A text lesson guides students through South Africa's history and people, supported by questions and activities to make concepts stick. Finish with a quiz to check understanding.

Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

Warm-Up

  • Give each student a sheet of paper and have them fold it to create three sections; label the three sections 'History,' 'Facts' and 'Cultures.'
  • Ask students to fill in each section of their charts about themselves, telling their personal history, facts about themselves, and describing their personal cultures. Share your own as an example, telling your history (where you grew up, what schools you went to, siblings, etc.), facts about yourself and your culture or genetic history.
  • When finished, divide students into small groups and have them share their charts.
