Listening, writing, speaking, and... reading! Test your Spanish reading skills in this practice activity on pastimes. Read about what people do in their free time and see how much you understand.

Cierto - Falso

¡Hola! Today we're going to read paragraphs about what people do in their free time, and see how much we understand. ¡Vamos!

Actividad Numero 1 is a true/false exercise. You'll see a paragraph, and then you'll see five cierto-falso questions to answer.

  5. A veces ella lee.

Muy bien. What are the answers? F, C, C, C, F. ? Qué tal? Let's follow the translation of what it says:

'My name is Susanna and I don't like sports very much, but I have other hobbies. I read a lot - I read books, magazines, my English lessons… I also write emails and I spend hours on the Internet. Sometimes I go to the movies with my girlfriends and afterwards, we go to a café and talk about all kinds of things! I don't like the mountains so much. I prefer the beach where I can sunbathe and swim all day!'

Bien, let's look at a couple things here. Remember leo comes from the infinitive verb leer. A veces means 'sometimes.' And there are a couple cognates. Otros - did you infer from context that this might be 'others'? Kudos if you did! Conversamos, 'converse.' Prefiero, 'prefer' - and with an O on the end, it's 'I prefer.' Puedo means 'I can.' Oh, and what about después? Después can mean later, after, afterwards, or then, according to context.

Bueno, numero dos. Read the next story and answer the questions.

2) Me llamo Jorge y me encantan los deportes! El museo? Noooo. La computadora? Noooo. Los restaurantes elegantes? Noooo.

  5. Descansa cuando está de vacaciones.

Muy bien. What are the answers? C, C, F, F, F. ?Qué tal? Let's follow the translation of what it says:

'My name is George and I love sports! The museum? Nooo. Computers? Noooo. Fine dining? Noooo. I play basketball and I wrestle almost all year long. I'm in the pool all winter, and in the summer, I like to compete in track and field. When I'm at the lake with my family or on vacation in the mountains, I swim and I hike. Sports are my life!'
