Let's go to the store - or lots of them. In this lesson, you'll discover a word pattern that denotes little specialty shops that sell everything from bread to stuffed animals to screwdrivers.

The Pattern

Divertido! Fun day today! This lesson is all about little shops and stores, and the pattern that goes with them. Vamos!

First, let's look at this word: zapatería. Look closely now. A word that you already know is tucked inside this word, or at least most of it. Do you see it? Yes... zapato (shoe).

Now let's look at librería. Do you see the word in this one? Yes... libro (book).

How about pescadería? Mmm-hmm. Pescado (fish).

And frutería? Fruta (fruit).

So, what do you see? Ería. Ería. Ería. What might it mean? Zapatería comes from zapato, so this is a place to buy shoes... a shoe shop. Librería comes from libro, so this is a bookstore. Pescadería comes from pescado, so what is it? Yes, an entire store full of fish. And frutería is a fruit stand or fruit store.

We found the pattern. Now we know that the ería on the end of the word means store or shop, and we know that the rest of the word is what the shop sells. Vamos! Let's look at them all.
