An Assessment

Being a teacher is more than simply instructing your students; you also need to prepare assessments for your students. We define an assessment as the evaluation of someone's ability. For your students, you are evaluating their understanding of the material you have instructed them in. There's a process to follow to make sure that your assessments are used to evaluate the right things.

The Objectives

When you teach a course subject such as math, science, or English, you'll find that each of these subjects have state standards that need to be met during the educational year. These state standards are the educational topics that the state has decided are important for your students to learn. Because your students need to meet these state standards before moving on to the next grade level, and to graduate middle and high school, it's important that you as the teacher make sure your students understand the educational topics that are part of the state's standard. The first step is to create your objectives so they cover these state standards. Objectives tell you what you are looking for in your assessment; are you looking to see if your students understand the material, or are you looking for your student's abilities to apply the material? If you are giving a test on the material that was just learned, your objective can be something like 'students will be able to answer 80 percent of the questions correctly to demonstrate that they understand the material'. If you are using guided practice as a way to assess whether your students understand the lesson, your objective can be 'students will be able to finish the practice problems with fewer than three hints from the teacher to show that they understand the lesson'. If your students meet the objective, then your assessment shows that your teaching was successful. Your teaching has taught the students what they need to know.
