Guess the Companies Behind the Ticker Symbols

Shares of stock are publicly traded on the stock market, with each company being represented by what is referred to as a ticker symbol. This game pits two teams against one another in a battle for the top ticker title.

Materials

  • A comprehensive list of stock market ticker symbols
  • Two buzzers or bells
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard

Instructions

  • Divide the class into two teams.
  • Give each team one of the buzzers.
  • Explain to the teams that they will be competing for the title of 'Top Ticker.' You will write a ticker symbol on the board. The teams will ring the buzzer to try to guess the company behind the ticker symbol. The first group to ring their buzzer will get the chance to share their guess by writing the name of the company on the board. If they guess it correctly, they earn a point. If they guess it incorrectly, the other team gets a chance to guess. If the other team guess it right, that team wins two points. This process is repeated for as long as is deemed necessary. The team with the most points wins!

Mock Stock Exchange

Stock brokers participate in daily trades on the stock market on behalf of their investors. This activity creates a mock stock exchange in the classroom.

Materials

  • Video of floor traders on the stock exchange working on the floor
  • A stopwatch
  • Small pads of paper
