Instructor: Clio Stearns

If you are teaching your high school students about business and economics, you will want them to understand the stock market. This lesson offers some projects that will help your students learn about the stock market from a variety of perspectives.

Teaching About the Stock Market

Whether you are teaching history, business or economics, you will probably want to help your high school students understand what the stock market is, how it has evolved historically, and how it works in practice. Of course, you can always give your students a lecture on the stock market, but they are more likely to remember and internalize the major ideas if you get them involved in projects.

When students do projects, they learn from a variety of different learning styles and strengths and are often able to work collaboratively to achieve an understanding. The project ideas in this lesson will help your students access the stock market on their own terms and develop a deep and abiding understanding of its complexities.

Stock Market Projects

Each project is followed by a brief description and ideas for helping students get the most from the project.

History of the Stock Market

Some students will want to understand how the stock market even came to be in the first place, and this project is a great one for these history-oriented learners. Students can work in partnerships or small groups. They should research the history of the stock market from its inception to its present form.
