Story Retell Activities for Kids

Instructor: Bethany Calderwood

Bethany has taught special education in grades PK-5 and has a master's degree in special education.

These elementary level activities are designed to help you enhance your students' reading comprehension through story retelling. Activities include group and individual work.

Retelling Stories

One basic gauge of reading comprehension is a reader's ability to retell the story in their own words. Does the reader grasp the main points of the story? Can the reader share plot, setting, characters, and conflict? Activities that engage students in retelling stories they've read can act to both enhance and evaluate levels of reading comprehension. These activities can be adapted to different levels of elementary students who are working on story retelling.
