In this lesson we will discuss the components of developing correct posture. We will explore the different ways to improve posture and how correct posture can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

What is Posture?

Posture is the manner in which we hold our body without even thinking about it. Our posture adapts to our body positions, our movements, and the activities we endure throughout our lives. However, the posture we maintain is often not a correct posture. If we do not develop proper postures correctly, our bodies can be subjected to health issues and problems over time. Our body uses our muscles, nerves, and ligaments to maintain posture.

Throughout this lesson we will discuss the consequences of improper posture as well as the benefits of developing correct posture and some information on how to do so.

Cost of Poor Posture

Our body will always compensate our posture to a position that is most comfortable. In most people, this compensated posture is putting tremendous stress on our bodies. A common poor posture that affects many people today is one where our heads are leaned forward, our shoulders are rounded forward, and our low back area is flat and in a flexed forward position. This type of posture is often due to the increase in technology use and the increase of desk jobs where people are forced to sit or stand in compromising positions for prolonged periods of time. This posture puts a tremendous amount of stress on our muscles, ligaments, and joints which can lead to:

  • Wear and tear of our muscles and ligaments
  • Joint dysfunction
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Trouble breathing
  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Increased risk of injury

Benefits of Correct Posture

Having a well-developed posture can provide many health and lifestyle benefits. Your muscles and ligaments will have less chance of being injured or overworked. Your pain levels will decrease and your coordination and balance will improve. In addition, the joints in your body will undergo less stress, which can keep you moving pain free and easier. When your body is functioning with proper posture, it experiences less stress and less risk, resulting in improved health over time.
