Straw Rockets Lesson Plan

Instructor: Kerry Gray

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

This lesson plan provides teachers with instructions for building and explaining straw rockets. Students will learn about the engineering design process and apply it towards creating an improved rocket design.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson students will be able to:

  • effectively use the engineering design process.
  • collect and record data related to their straw rocket.
  • use data to modify their rocket design.

Length

This lesson will take approximately 45-90 minutes.

Curriculum Standards

NGSS.MS-ETS1-2.

Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

NGSS.MS-ETS1-3.

Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

NGSS.MS-ETS1-4.

Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

Vocabulary

  • body
  • engineering design
  • fins
  • nose cone
