Instructor: Jennifer Lowery

Let's face it. The world can be a stressful place! In this lesson, we will learn how to spot things that are stressful. We will also talk about how to reduce that unwanted stress.

Too Much Homework!

You have probably heard an adult say that they are stressed out. What does that mean? Well, stress is how our body reacts to situations that are overwhelming or scary. Did you know that stress is not something that happens only to adults! That's right! Kids can feel stress too. Stress can be from too much homework, or even something more serious like losing someone you love.

Have you ever felt stressed like this when faced with hours of homework?
Anxiety

Unfortunately, we do not live in a stress free world. But there's good news! You can learn how to manage stress so that you can get through those tough times a little easier.

Stay Away from Stress

Stress can be everywhere. Knowing the specific things that cause you stress can help with dealing with that stress. Something that causes stress is called a trigger. Is your trigger a sibling that sometimes drives you crazy? Maybe you get worried on a Thursday night because you have a huge test on Friday. Or maybe loud noises cause you stress.

Knowing your triggers can help you handle your stress. If your little brother bugs you sometimes and you're tired from school, you can try to avoid him until you're rested. Studying a little bit each night for your test on Friday might help you relax on Thursday night. Also, if loud noises bother you, do not go to a fireworks show on the Fourth of July!

Calm Your Mind

What if you can't avoid a stressful situation? There are ways that you can get through it, and one way is to calm your mind. Instead of thinking about what is worrying you, take a minute to visualize something happy. This means have a picture in your mind of something that makes you feel happy! This picture could be a sunny beach, or a bunch of puppies ready to play! Even if it is a few seconds, a happy thought can make you feel much better!

Relax Your Body

Have you ever noticed that your body feels tense when you are stressed? There are ways to help your body relax when you are worried about something. Exercise is a great way to manage stress. Feeling worried? Take a walk or a bike ride. Many people practice the exercise of yoga. So what is yoga? Well, yoga is a way of stretching and breathing that helps you feel calm.

Exercise can be very helpful for managing stress.
